Vacationing with Adult Children

Vacationing with 20somethings is a tricky but adventurous endeavor. Now that we have grown children, finding the perfect place for the four of us is not as simple as it once was when they were younger. Back in those days, we needed a hotel with a pool (and maybe a swim up bar for Ron) but that was about it. Now, it’s all about the kids having some time to do their own thing while we enjoy doing ours. They like night life, hanging out with other 20somethings, and sleeping late every day. We like a peaceful oasis by the beach, great dinners, new places to explore and peace and quiet at night.  Tricky yes. Impossible no. We decided to head south of the border for our spring vacation 2017…

The Manta restaurant in Cabo San Lucas

I know Cabo San Lucas is a popular college spring break destination and we really didn’t want to be surrounded by hundreds of kids drinking and partying all day. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…if that’s your thing and you’re still in your early 20s…but for those of us who have “been there done that” it is also a destination where you can find a peaceful oasis by the Sea of Cortez on Medano beach and wile away the hours sipping a skinny margarita or an ice cold Pacifico…

Beautiful View

So while we sipped Sangrias, our kids and many of their friends who also flew down for their own spring break, got together to kayak, snorkel, paddle board, sleep on the beach and show up right on time when dinner was ready…I have to say I loved it! It was fun to watch them enjoy all these activities and they bring a youthful energy to the group. They make us laugh, remind of us of crazy things we used to do in college, and generally seem to enjoy being around us too! If I had my choice of vacationing with my kids and their friends, or vacationing alone, I think I’d choose the family vacations every time. Not that I don’t enjoy time alone with my husband, because we always make time for that too. In fact, we tacked on our own romantic two-day getaway to vacation from this vacation…(scroll down to see our Las Vegas trip!)

Kayaking on Medano Beach

One fun element I forgot to mention is that Ron surprised me on this trip! At first, he had another obligation and would not be able to go with us to Cabo. Since this is Anna’s last spring break before graduating college, I decided to make it a “girls trip” and just go anyway. But low and behold, that sneaky guy snuck up behind me on the second day and turned this girls trip into the family vacation I was hoping of all along…

Surprise!!!

We celebrated 28 years of marriage this month, out last child is graduating college in a few weeks, our parents are healthy and we are blessed with dear friendships in our lives. I am grateful each day for this life and hope yours is filled with joy and happiness too.

Okay in case you’re still here….we decided to tack on a couples-only vacation to this family trip by stopping in Las Vegas on the way home! We sent the kids back to Denver and we flew to the land of “What Happens Here, Stays Here.” Go check it out if you have a minute…
